You may not realize it, but your daily commute could be taking you down some of Lexington’s most dangerous roads. Between 2019 and 2023, 170 traffic crashes throughout the city led to at least one death, an average of about 30 people per year. In 2023, the death toll from motor vehicle accidents reached a five-year high of 49, nearly double the 25 deaths reported in 2019.
Certain driving behaviors, like drunk driving and speeding, can lead to a traffic wreck. Similarly, the road you’re driving on can increase the likelihood of an injurious or fatal car accident. Specifically, a road’s physical characteristics and the volume of traffic it sees can make traveling on that road more dangerous than others.
5 Deadly Lexington Roads To Be Aware Of
One way to measure a road’s overall riskiness is to consider the number of fatalities that have been reported on it. The following five routes experienced an elevated number of fatal traffic accidents between 2019 and 2023 compared to others in the state:
1. North/South Broadway
Broadway runs through the middle of Lexington, following a northeast-southwest axis. Along the way, it intersects with several major highways and streets, including Loudon Avenue, where several fatal accidents have occurred. Two deadly crashes were reported near downtown and before East Sixth Street.
2. New Circle Road
As this street’s name implies, New Circle Road encircles Lexington. This design enables drivers to access all parts of the city without having to use surface roads and being delayed by the many traffic lights that cut through the city’s center. But this convenience comes at a cost: Multiple fatal wrecks happen on this road every year.
3. Richmond Road
Similar to Broadway, Richmond Road cuts across Lexington along a roughly southeast-to-northwest line. It crosses numerous other streets and highways, including Broadway and New Circle Road. The stretch between Man of War Boulevard and Chinoe Road sees an average of one fatal accident per year.
4. Interstate 75
Interstate 75 is one of the city’s (and the nation’s) most-used interstates, extending from Florida to Michigan. It also has a reputation for being one of the country’s deadliest highways, with a fatality rate of 13.27 deaths per 100 miles in 2019. Approximately two traffic deaths occurred per year between 2019 and 2023 in the Lexington stretch.
5. East Loudon Boulevard
East Loudon Boulevard is located just northeast of downtown Lexington. Although it may not be as long as some of the other roads on this list, it’s no less dangerous.
No less than three fatal motor vehicle collisions have been reported near the intersection with Broadway in the past six years. Others have been reported just north of the intersection with Richard Cave Road, as well as on West Loudon Road.
Staying Safe on Lexington’s Dangerous Roads
If you live or work in Lexington, it can be tough to avoid driving on one or more of these dangerous roads. When you must use them, the following tips can help you reduce your risk of being hurt or killed in a traffic accident:
- Obey the speed limit and all right-of-way laws
- Stay alert to your surroundings and nearby traffic
- Exercise additional caution when approaching intersections and interchanges
- Use your vehicle’s signals and check your blind spots before changing lanes
- Never drive while impaired by drugs or alcohol or when you’re drowsy
By focusing on careful and defensive driving, you can increase your likelihood of arriving at your destination without incident.
